Ferritin and iron supplement

Ferritin and iron supplement - icon-clock
Ferritin acts as a storehouse of iron and transports it in the body. Ferritin is also generally considered an indicator of iron stores. Iron deficiency is diagnosed with blood tests and, on the recommendation of a doctor, iron supplements can be used to increase the deficiency.

What is ferritin?

Ferritin acts as the body’s iron storage. One of the main roles of iron in the body is to bind oxygen in hemoglobin found in red blood cells and transport oxygen through the bloodstream.

Causes of low ferritin may include increased iron demand, insufficient dietary iron intake, or iron loss due to bleeding (for example, menstruation). Long-term iron deficiency can eventually lead to anemia. If you experience several symptoms related to iron deficiency, it may be worth considering having your ferritin levels tested.

How to measure ferritin?

The cause of low ferritin levels should always be investigated before starting iron supplementation. After this, levels can be improved through lifestyle changes and oral iron supplements.

Tests used to measure iron levels include:

1 - Serum iron. This test measures the amount of iron in your blood.
2 - Serum ferritin. Ferritin is a protein that helps store iron in the body.
3 - Transferrin level or total iron-binding capacity. Transferrin is a protein that transports iron in your blood.
